Appalachia to Bluegrass Americana
Susie Glaze & the Hilonesome Duo
Susie Glaze & The Hilonesome Band have been delighting audiences large and small now for almost eleven years. In their tribute to the great American folk music pioneer Jean Ritchie, they share with audiences the great, rich traditional music that came to this country along with the first immigrants from England, Ireland and Scotland, settling in the Eastern mountains of Kentucky, Tennessee and Virginia. Along with string band sounds, incorporating indigenous traditional instruments such as Mountain Dulcimer, Autoharp and hollow-backed, old-time banjo, they perform a cappella many of the ballads that came to be known as the Child Ballads, as well as lighter, "play party" songs for children, and tunes written in the early life of the immigration population in this country. They then show how the form of Bluegrass music sprung naturally from the old forms, also bringing in songs from contemporary composers of American roots music living songwriters employing the older forms in order to demonstrate how the old forms endure and are being used to tell new stories in the old way.
